Free Permit Test Questions and Answers PDF 2026 - Printable Study Guide for Every State

A free printable study guide for the permit test

Most people study for the learner's permit test on a phone, and our interactive practice tests are built for that. But a lot of you asked for something you can print, mark up at the kitchen table, or hand to a teenager who studies better on paper. So every state now has a free permit test questions and answers PDF - one file per state, generated from the same question bank the online tests use.

What is in each PDF

Every state file follows the same layout:

  • Cover with quick facts - number of questions on the real test, passing score, how many you can miss, minimum age, the permit's official name, fee, retake rule and holding period. These are verified against the state agency and last reviewed 2026.
  • 80+ practice questions - the state-specific questions first (speed limits, BAC limits, phone laws, permit rules), then the universal rules-of-the-road questions that every state tests.
  • Answer key with explanations - not just the letter. Every answer has a one- or two-sentence explanation of the rule, so you learn it instead of memorising it.
  • Links back to the official handbook - the source every real exam question comes from.

The most-requested states are below; the PDF hub lists all fifty.

Why a printable question bank still helps

Reading the handbook is passive. Answering questions - and getting some wrong - is what makes the rules stick; researchers call it the testing effect. A printed set lets you do that anywhere, lets a parent quiz you in the car, and keeps you off a screen the night before the test. Mark the ones you miss, then go back to those handbook sections.

How to use these PDFs effectively

  • Answer on paper first. Cover the answer key and do the whole set before checking anything.
  • Score yourself against your state's pass mark (it is on the cover - most states need 75% to 80%).
  • Read every explanation, including the ones you got right by luck.
  • Switch to the online tests for the final week. They shuffle questions, include the road-sign picture questions a PDF cannot show, track what you miss in a review bank, and have a full-length DMV test simulator for each state.

What the PDFs do not cover

  • Road-sign picture questions. The real test shows sign images; the PDFs are text only. Use the online road signs test for those.
  • The real exam questions. Nobody outside the DMV has them. These are original study questions written from each state's official handbook, so they cover the same rules.
  • Fees and rules that change. The cover shows the facts as last reviewed; always confirm on the official agency site linked in the file.

Licence and sharing

The PDFs are free for personal study and for teachers, driving schools and parents to print for their own students. Please link to this page rather than re-hosting the files, and do not sell them.
