Free Indiana BMV Practice Permit Test - Practice Test 3 2026
This Practice Test 3 is modeled on the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) written knowledge exam, whose length the agency does not publish; to pass you need 80% correct. The test has two sections - traffic signs and traffic rules - and you need 80% or higher on each section. These 25 questions rotate through traffic laws, road signs, and right-of-way - the core topics the BMV tests most heavily. Every question includes an explanation, so you learn the rule behind each answer - not just whether you got it right.
You are driving at 60 mph on a highway. How many feet does your vehicle travel per second?

1. Two large trucks are driving through a multi-lane roundabout at the same time. Under Indiana's rules, which driver must yield?
- A. The driver in the left lane
- B. The driver in the right lane (correct)
- C. The driver of the longer truck
- D. The driver going straight through
Why: The truck in the right lane yields to the truck in the left lane, slowing or stopping if needed. Smaller vehicles must also yield to large vehicles moving through a multi-lane roundabout.

2. In Indiana, a driver under 21 can be cited for operating a vehicle with a BAC of:
- A. 0.02 or higher (correct)
- B. 0.05 or higher
- C. 0.08 or higher
- D. 0.10 or higher
Why: Indiana's under-21 limit is 0.02 BAC. At 0.08, any driver is considered legally intoxicated.

3. If your right wheels drift off the pavement onto the shoulder, you should:
- A. Brake hard and steer back onto the road
- B. Ease off the gas and steer back gently (correct)
- C. Speed up and steer back on right away
- D. Jerk the wheel left to get back at once
Why: If your wheels drift onto the shoulder, do not brake hard or jerk the wheel. Ease off the accelerator, keep a firm grip, and steer back onto the pavement gently once your speed has decreased - this prevents loss of control.

4. Your brake lights are not working. Which hand signal tells drivers behind you that you are slowing or stopping?
- A. Left arm out and bent upward
- B. Left arm held straight out
- C. Right arm waved out the window
- D. Left arm out and bent downward (correct)
Why: An arm extended out and bent down signals slowing or stopping. Arm bent up is a right turn and arm straight out is a left turn.

5. A black-and-white rectangular sign reading 'NO TURN ON RED' means:
- A. Turn on red only if no cars are coming
- B. No turning on red, even after stopping (correct)
- C. Only left turns on red are banned here
- D. Turns are never allowed here
Why: A 'No Turn on Red' sign prohibits turning while the signal is red, even after a complete stop. You must wait for a green light to turn.
6. What does this sign tell you?
- A. The speed you must drive at all times
- B. The maximum speed in ideal conditions (correct)
- C. The minimum speed allowed
- D. The average speed of traffic on this road
Why: This is a speed limit sign - a regulatory sign showing the maximum legal speed under ideal conditions. You must drive slower when weather or traffic conditions require it.
