Free Iowa DOT Test Simulator 2026

35 questions80% to passExplanations includedFree

This DMV Test Simulator is modeled on the Department of Transportation (DOT) written knowledge exam, whose length the agency does not publish; to pass you need a pass mark the DOT does not publish (our practice tests use 80%). It is a mock test: 35 questions (the DOT does not publish the real test length) scored to the 80% pass mark. Answers are marked only when you submit the whole test, then you review every question with its explanation. Every question includes an explanation, so you learn the rule behind each answer - not just whether you got it right.

  • To pass: a pass mark the DOT does not publish (our practice tests use 80%)

What's on the Iowa DMV Test Simulator

The DOT does not publish the number of questions or the pass mark for the Iowa knowledge test. Our 35-question simulator uses 80% (28 correct, so 7 misses) as a safe target - check with the DOT for the exact rule. The simulator draws a fresh set from all 198 Iowa permit questions each time, so no two attempts are the same.

Sample questions from this test, with answers

Want to test yourself first? Take the test above before reading these. Every answer below is checked against the source shown.

  1. 1. Compared with dry pavement, how much longer can stopping distances be on ice and snow?

    • A. As much as 2 times longer
    • B. As much as 4 times longer
    • C. About the same as dry roads
    • D. As much as 10 times longer (correct)

Why: The Iowa manual warns that stopping distances can be 10 times greater on ice and snow. Slow down early, brake only while going straight, and stay far behind the vehicle ahead.

  2. 2. How far from a railroad crossing must you stay when parking in Iowa?

    • A. At least 15 feet
    • B. At least 50 feet (correct)
    • C. At least 25 feet
    • D. At least 100 feet

Why: Iowa does not allow parking closer than 50 feet from a railroad crossing. A car parked too close can block the view of drivers checking for trains.

  3. 3. You are driving at 60 mph on a highway. How many feet does your vehicle travel per second?

    • A. 44 feet
    • B. 66 feet
    • C. 88 feet (correct)
    • D. 100 feet

Why: At 60 mph, a vehicle travels about 88 feet per second (60 x 5,280 / 3,600 = 88). Understanding stopping distances is critical - at 60 mph you need approximately 300 feet to stop.

  4. 4. A yellow sign showing a truck tilted on two wheels warns of:

    • A. A steep downhill grade for trucks
    • B. A curve where trucks may tip over (correct)
    • C. A truck inspection station
    • D. A road with soft shoulders ahead

Why: This sign warns of a curve sharp enough that trucks and top-heavy vehicles risk rolling over. All drivers should reduce speed before entering.

  5. 5. A round (circular) sign indicates:

    • A. A stop ahead
    • B. A railroad crossing (correct)
    • C. A speed limit change
    • D. A one-way street

Why: A round, yellow sign with a black X and two R's warns of a railroad crossing ahead. The circular shape is used exclusively for railroad advance-warning signs.

    • B. Stop at least two car lengths from the rails
    • C. The crossing is two miles down the road
    • D. There are two sets of tracks at the crossing (correct)

Why: When a crossing has more than one track, a sign under the crossbuck shows how many tracks there are. Be ready for a train on any of them.
