Free Virginia DMV Test Simulator 2026
This DMV Test Simulator is modeled on the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) written knowledge exam, which has 40 questions; to pass you need at least 10 of 10 on Road Signs and at least 24 of 30 on General Knowledge. It is a mock test: 40 questions, the length of the real test, scored the way the DMV scores them (10 of 10 on Road Signs and 24 of 30 on General Knowledge). Answers are marked only when you submit the whole test, then you review every question with its explanation. Every question includes an explanation, so you learn the rule behind each answer - not just whether you got it right.
Virginia DMV mock test
Answer all 40 questions first. Nothing is marked until you submit the whole test, so the score shows how ready you are, and then you review every answer with its explanation.
- 40 questions, the same number as the real test
- To pass: at least 10 of 10 on Road Signs and at least 24 of 30 on General Knowledge
- Skip, go back and change answers until you submit
- Unanswered questions count as wrong
Time: We found no published time limit for the Virginia knowledge test.
What's on the Virginia DMV Test Simulator
The real Virginia knowledge test has 40 questions. The Virginia test is scored in separate parts, so the limit applies to each part: you can miss at most none of the 10 Road Signs questions (all must be correct) and 6 of the 30 General Knowledge questions. Missing more than that on either part fails the test, even if your combined score is high. The simulator draws a fresh set from all 199 Virginia permit questions each time, so no two attempts are the same.
Topics in this test's question pool
- Road signs 72
- Traffic laws 45
- Safe driving 30
- Right of way 13
- Emergencies 10
- Parking 9
- Alcohol & drugs 9
- Speed limits 6
- Vehicle equipment 5
199 questions in the pool, 37 of them written specifically for Virginia. Each attempt shows 40 in a new order.
Sample questions from this test, with answers
Want to test yourself first? Take the test above before reading these. Every answer below is checked against the source shown.
1. On a two-lane Virginia road, you come up behind a stopped trash truck that is collecting garbage. If you cannot change lanes, how must you pass it?
- A. Slow 10 mph below the limit and leave 2 feet (correct)
- B. Slow 5 mph below the limit and leave 1 foot
- C. Keep the speed limit and leave 3 feet
- D. Slow 20 mph below the limit and leave 5 feet
Why: On a road with fewer than four lanes, or when you cannot move over, Virginia requires you to slow to 10 mph below the posted limit and pass at least two feet to the left of the truck. On a highway with four or more lanes, move to a lane not next to it if you safely can.

2. In Virginia, what does a pink sign with black lettering tell you?
- A. You are near a traffic incident area (correct)
- B. You are entering a school zone
- C. You are near a hospital or clinic
- D. You are near a park or historic site
Why: Orange-and-black signs advise and warn in construction areas, while pink-and-black signs do the same in incident areas. Brown signs point out historic or cultural sites.

3. Traffic ahead of you is moving slowly. May you use the shared center left-turn lane to drive around it?
- A. Yes, if no oncoming vehicle is using it
- B. Yes, as long as you signal left first
- C. No - the lane is only for vehicles turning left (correct)
- D. Yes, but only for a distance of one block
Why: A shared center lane is reserved for left turns by traffic from both directions. Using it for through travel or to pass other vehicles is not allowed.
4. A yellow sign with two arrows pointing in opposite directions (one up, one down) means:
- A. One-way traffic ahead
- B. Two-way traffic ahead (correct)
- C. Divided highway begins
- D. Passing lane ahead
Why: This sign warns that you are leaving a divided roadway and entering a two-way road. Oncoming traffic will now be present - keep right and do not pass unless permitted.
5. For adult drivers (21+), what Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) is the legal limit in most states?
- A. 0.05%
- B. 0.08% (correct)
- C. 0.04%
- D. 0.02%
Why: In most US states, a BAC of 0.08% or higher is legally considered driving under the influence (DUI) for drivers 21 and older. Always check your state's specific laws.
6. A yellow diamond sign showing arrows that curve around in a circle indicates:
- A. A U-turn area ahead
- B. A roundabout ahead (correct)
- C. A detour loop ahead
- D. A dead-end turnaround
Why: The Circular Intersection sign (a yellow diamond showing arrows curving counterclockwise in a circle) warns of a roundabout ahead. Slow down, yield to traffic already in the circle, and enter when there is a safe gap. Round signs are used only for railroad crossing advance warnings.
