Free Michigan SOS Test Simulator 2026

50 questions70% to passExplanations includedFree

This DMV Test Simulator is modeled on the Secretary of State (SOS) written knowledge exam, whose length the agency does not publish; to pass you need a pass mark the SOS does not publish (our practice tests use 70%). The test has two portions that must both be passed: an "Operator" section on traffic laws (about 45 minutes) and a "Signs" section (about 15 minutes). It is a mock test: 50 questions (the SOS does not publish the real test length) scored to the 70% pass mark. Answers are marked only when you submit the whole test, then you review every question with its explanation. Every question includes an explanation, so you learn the rule behind each answer - not just whether you got it right.

Answer all 50 questions first. Nothing is marked until you submit the whole test, so the score shows how ready you are, and then you review every answer with its explanation.

  • 50 questions (our test length; the official count is not published)
  • To pass: a pass mark the SOS does not publish (our practice tests use 70%)
  • Skip, go back and change answers until you submit
  • Unanswered questions count as wrong

Inside this test

What's on the Michigan DMV Test Simulator

The SOS does not publish the number of questions or the pass mark for the Michigan knowledge test. Our 50-question simulator uses 70% (35 correct, so 15 misses) as a safe target - check with the SOS for the exact rule. The test has two portions that must both be passed: an "Operator" section on traffic laws (about 45 minutes) and a "Signs" section (about 15 minutes). The simulator draws a fresh set from all 200 Michigan permit questions each time, so no two attempts are the same.

Sample questions from this test, with answers

Want to test yourself first? Take the test above before reading these. Every answer below is checked against the source shown.

  1. 1. When it starts to rain, the Michigan manual says to slow down and leave at least how much following distance?

    • A. Twice the normal distance (correct)
    • B. The same as on a dry road
    • C. One extra car length
    • D. Half the normal distance

Why: Roads are slickest in the first half hour of rain, before oil on the pavement washes away. Slow down and allow at least twice your normal following distance.

  2. 2. In Michigan, what is the speed limit on a highway that is not a freeway when no other limit is posted?

    • A. 45 mph
    • B. 50 mph
    • C. 55 mph (correct)
    • D. 65 mph

Why: Michigan sets 55 mph on streets and highways that are not freeways unless a different limit is posted.

  3. 3. A yellow sign showing a traffic signal symbol means:

    • A. The signal ahead is broken
    • B. A traffic light is ahead (correct)
    • C. A railroad signal ahead
    • D. An emergency vehicle signal

Why: A signal-ahead warning sign tells you a traffic light is coming up, often where it may be hard to see in time. Be prepared to slow and stop.

  4. 4. The single most effective way to avoid an alcohol-related crash is to:

    • A. Drink coffee and wait 30 minutes before driving
    • B. Drive slowly and stay in the right lane
    • C. Not drive at all after drinking any alcohol (correct)
    • D. Stay under 0.08% by counting your drinks

Why: There is no safe way to drive after drinking. The only sure prevention is to not drive at all after consuming alcohol - arrange a designated sober driver, taxi, or rideshare instead.

  5. 5. When should you use your windshield wipers?

    • A. Only once rain is heavy, to save the blades
    • B. Whenever rain, snow or spray blurs your view (correct)
    • C. Only when the car's rain sensor turns them on
    • D. Only in rain, not for snow or road spray

Why: Use your wipers whenever precipitation or road spray reduces your view. Many states also require your headlights to be on whenever your wipers are in use because of weather.

  6. 6. A yellow sign with a black arrow bending at a 90-degree angle indicates:

    • A. A gentle curve
    • B. A sharp turn ahead (correct)
    • C. A side road ahead
    • D. A lane shift ahead

Why: A sharp-angle arrow warns of a sharp turn (not a gentle curve) ahead. Slow down significantly before the turn - the recommended speed is often posted below.
