Free Michigan SOS Practice Permit Test - Practice Test 2 2026
This Practice Test 2 is modeled on the Secretary of State (SOS) written knowledge exam, whose length the agency does not publish; to pass you need a pass mark the SOS does not publish (our practice tests use 70%). The test has two portions that must both be passed: an "Operator" section on traffic laws (about 45 minutes) and a "Signs" section (about 15 minutes). These 25 questions rotate through traffic laws, road signs, and right-of-way - the core topics the SOS tests most heavily. Every question includes an explanation, so you learn the rule behind each answer - not just whether you got it right.
When entering a highway from an on-ramp, who has the right of way?

1. Under normal conditions, what following distance does the Michigan manual call for?
- A. 1 to 2 seconds
- B. 2 seconds
- C. 3 to 4 seconds (correct)
- D. 8 to 10 seconds
Why: Michigan calls for a 3- to 4-second following distance on dry or wet pavement. At higher speeds or in bad conditions, increase it to 6 seconds or more.

2. Michigan requires a car seat or booster seat until a child is 8 years old or reaches what height?
- A. 4 feet 5 inches
- B. 4 feet 9 inches (correct)
- C. 5 feet 0 inches
- D. 4 feet 2 inches
Why: Children must ride in a car seat or booster until they are 8 or 4 feet 9 inches tall, whichever comes first. The manual suggests using the height rule, since a seat belt may not fit a small child.

3. What does this sign require you to do?
- A. Stop fully even when the road is clear of cars
- B. Slow down, yield, and stop only if needed (correct)
- C. Go first - cross traffic must yield
- D. Merge without changing your speed
Why: This is a YIELD sign. Slow down, be prepared to stop, and give the right of way to traffic and pedestrians. A full stop is required only if necessary.

4. A yellow diamond sign showing an arrow that curves back and forth several times warns of:
- A. A winding road ahead (correct)
- B. A slippery road
- C. A single sharp curve
- D. A steep hill ahead
Why: The Winding Road sign (a single arrow that bends back and forth) warns of three or more curves in a row ahead. An S-shaped arrow with only two bends is the Reverse Curve sign. Reduce speed and stay alert through the curves.

5. What does a blue traffic sign indicate?
- A. Recreation areas such as state parks
- B. Rules you must obey, such as limits
- C. Motorist services like gas and food (correct)
- D. Highway route information
Why: Blue signs provide information about motorist services: gas stations, food, lodging, hospitals, and rest areas. They help drivers find services along the route.
6. What does a downward-pointing triangle sign mean?
- A. Stop ahead
- B. Yield (correct)
- C. Do not enter
- D. Merge
Why: An inverted (downward-pointing) triangle is always a YIELD sign. Slow down, be ready to stop, and give the right of way to traffic and pedestrians.
