Free Michigan SOS Practice Permit Test - Practice Test 1 2026

25 questions70% to passExplanations includedFree

This Practice Test 1 is modeled on the Secretary of State (SOS) written knowledge exam, whose length the agency does not publish; to pass you need a pass mark the SOS does not publish (our practice tests use 70%). The test has two portions that must both be passed: an "Operator" section on traffic laws (about 45 minutes) and a "Signs" section (about 15 minutes). These 25 questions rotate through traffic laws, road signs, and right-of-way - the core topics the SOS tests most heavily. Every question includes an explanation, so you learn the rule behind each answer - not just whether you got it right.

Sample questions from this test, with answers

Want to test yourself first? Take the test above before reading these. Every answer below is checked against the source shown.

  1. 1. A school bus with flashing red lights is stopped on the far side of a highway split by a grass median. You are going the other way. What does Michigan law require?

    • A. Stop at least 20 feet from the bus
    • B. Slow to 15 mph while you go past
    • C. You may continue with care (correct)
    • D. Stop until the red lights turn off

Why: You do not need to stop for a school bus on the other side of a highway divided by a barrier such as a concrete or grass median. Drivers on the same side as the bus must stop.

  2. 2. Unless signs show a different limit, what is the speed limit in a Michigan platted subdivision?

    • A. 25 mph (correct)
    • B. 15 mph
    • C. 35 mph
    • D. 30 mph

Why: The Michigan Vehicle Code sets 25 mph in platted subdivisions and condominium complexes. The 15 mph limit is for mobile home parks and some municipal parks.

  3. 3. What does an orange-colored sign indicate?

    • A. A school zone ahead
    • B. A work zone ahead (correct)
    • C. A railroad crossing ahead
    • D. A hospital zone ahead

Why: Orange signs indicate construction and maintenance work zones. Reduce speed, watch for workers and equipment, and be prepared for changed traffic patterns. Fines are often doubled.

  4. 4. When are you required to use headlights?

    • A. Only at night on roads without streetlights
    • B. At night and when visibility is reduced (correct)
    • C. Only when it is fully dark, not in bad weather
    • D. Only on highways at night, not on city streets

Why: Every state requires headlights at night and when visibility is reduced. The exact period varies: some states say sunset to sunrise, many say 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise. Many states also require headlights whenever your wipers are on or you cannot see a set distance (often 500 or 1,000 feet) ahead.

  5. 5. In many areas a curb is painted yellow. What should you understand from this?

    • A. You may park there for as long as you like
    • B. Stopping or parking is restricted there (correct)
    • C. It is reserved for motorcycles
    • D. It shows a spot reserved for disabled drivers

Why: Curb colors are not uniform across states. In California and Nevada yellow means a loading zone; in Florida, Tennessee and several other states a yellow curb means no parking. In every case it signals a restriction, so read nearby signs and follow state and local rules.

  6. 6. Who must yield when a pedestrian is crossing at a marked crosswalk?

    • A. The pedestrian, since cars cannot stop quickly
    • B. The driver must yield to the pedestrian (correct)
    • C. Whoever reached the crosswalk first
    • D. The driver, but only at a traffic signal

Why: Drivers must always yield to pedestrians who are crossing in a marked or unmarked crosswalk. Pedestrian safety is the highest priority.
